IMPROVED POLICE SERVICES FOR HERTFORD AND WARE

A decision taken by Hertfordshire Police Authority on Friday (6 October) brings the development of improved local access to police services in Hertford and Ware one step closer.

Members agreed a package to market and sell the current site of the Hertford and Ware Police Station and replace it with two new stations. This forms part of the Authority’s countywide long-term Public Access and Visibility Strategy (PAVS).

Chair of Hertfordshire Police Authority, Ian Laidlaw-Dickson, said: “PAVS is an exciting project, which aims to increase the number of stations across the county and improve accessibility of police services to the public. We aim to build two new stations to serve the people in Hertford and Ware and are putting the current station on the market in the near future to start the process.”

The hunt is now on to find sites for the two new stations. “However, the current Hertford and Ware Police Station will remain open until replacement facilities are operational,” said Ian.

It is proposed that Hertford will have a new Type 2 station fit for modern policing from which intervention and neighbourhood policing teams can be deployed. This may be based at the existing site or at another site within the Hertford area.

Ware, for the first time in many years, will have its own Type 3 station from which a neighbourhood policing team will be based. In addition, the Authority will be looking to work with partners across the Eastern Policing Area as a whole to establish small neighbourhood policing bases and would be interested to discuss any potential opportunities.

The disposal of the Hertford site, with its redundant probationer accommodation and training blocks, is part of a wider package of investment across the county. Work has already begun on the development of the Stevenage Police Station site, which will include a new dedicated custody suite, capable of serving the Eastern Area, and the Area Headquarters.

Together with increased custody provision at Hoddesdon, this will allow officers to drop off prisoners and return to patrolling more quickly.
