HERTFORDSHIRE CRIME REDUCTIONS COMPARE WELL WITH NATIONAL CRIME STATISTIC

NATIONAL crime statistics released today show that crime in Hertfordshire fell between April and June 2006 compared the same period in 2005 and that overall crime figures improved more in Hertfordshire compared to the national figures.

Overall recorded crime in Hertfordshire fell by 3%, serious violence fell by 29%, burglary fell by 19% and vehicle crime by 13%. Nationally overall crime fell by 2%, serious violence fell by 13%, burglary by 4% and vehicle crime remained static.

Some crime types did show a rise – for example drug offences increased by 48%, and other offences against the person- with no injury rose by 26%. These are linked to direct proactive police action against drugs houses and cannabis factories and the use of fixed penalties in the street against people causing a disturbance.

Robbery also showed a slight increase in Hertfordshire of 1% (two additional crimes) against a national rise of 5%.

Ian Laidlaw-Dickson, Chair of Herts Police Authority said: "These figures are very encouraging, particularly in serious violent crime and burglary, which have dropped considerably compared to the national picture. However, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels and must continue to work with our partners and all communities to cut crime even further and make Hertfordshire a hostile environment for criminals to operate in. Hertfordshire is already a safe county and by working together we can make it even safer. It is important now to see these figures being mirrored by increased feelings of safety and reassurance across all our communities".

Chief Constable Frank Whiteley said: “ These figures are very encouraging, though they are just a snap shot showing a short three month period. The officers and staff of Hertfordshire Constabulary are continuing to work hard to drive down crime in the county and target criminals and make Hertfordshire an even safer county.”
