POLICE JOINT WORKING GROUP SET UP
As part of ongoing dialogue, the Chairs, Chief Executives and Chief Constables of Hertfordshire, Essex and Bedfordshire police have agreed to set up a working group to look at opportunities for joint collaboration.
“Although the three police authorities have rejected the Home Secretary’s proposals to voluntarily merge, we recognise the importance of improving the way we do business and the need to work together throughout this process,” said Chair of Hertfordshire Police Authority, Ian Laidlaw-Dickson.
“Our aim is to make sure that the people of Hertfordshire continue to get the best possible police service that meets their needs.”
The working group will be based at Bishop’s Stortford police station and be made up of a Chief Officer and other staff from each force. The group will examine how each of the three forces currently work and the three police authorities will liaise closely with them during this process.
“The work undertaken by the group will be of benefit whatever the final outcome of the parliamentary process,” said Chief Constable Frank Whiteley. “It will help build a solid foundation to develop a better provision of policing for the public.”
The Police Authority is currently consulting the public about the merger proposals. “We have received over a thousand responses so far,” said Ian. “The consultation runs for another month (until 10 July) and I would encourage anyone who has not already done so to let us know their views on the proposals.”
Feedback from the consultation will be considered by Hertfordshire Police Authority when it meets on 21 July to agree its response to the Home Secretary.
Local councils and police authorities have been given until 11 August 2006 to raise any objections with the Home Office on the merger proposals.
The survey is available on this website or views can be emailed to survey.hpa@herts.pnn.police.uk. Or text MERGEYES or MERGENO to 81025.
