INDEPENDENT CUSTODY VISITORS
Independent Custody Visiting is a well-established system where volunteers attend police stations to check on the treatment of detainees and the conditions in which they are held.

April 2003 the scheme was put on a statutory footing when it became the legal responsibility under the Police Reform Act for all police authorities to operate an Independent Custody Visiting Scheme. As a result of this change and subsequent guidance from the Home Office, Hertfordshire is currently undertaking a thorough review of their scheme. Job Description and Person Specification details are being assessed as part of this review. Hertfordshire currently has a total of 62 Independent Custody Visitors.

Independent Custody Visitors are reimbursed for their legitimate expenses incurred in carrying out visits. Travelling expenses and subsistence rates are payable on the same basis as those provided to members of the Authority and met from the Authority’s budget.
